Is it Safe to try to lose weight during pregnancy? – The answer is no
Let’s clarify a few details about losing weight during pregnancy. You probably already know that it’s not a great thing that you have gained 50 plus pounds while you are pregnant. But is it healthy to lose this gained weight while you are in this condition?
Dr. Michael Cackovic, M.D., from The Ohio State University Medical Centre says that while the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) state that it is fine for pregnant women to do mild exercises, it is not advisable to actively try and lose weight when you are pregnant. He also points that women are encouraged to gain weight during pregnancy. The gaining, however, is different for women with different Body Mass Indexes (BMI). Women whose BMI is normal to need to gain 25 to 35 pounds, those who are overweight should gain 15 to 25 pounds, and women who are obese should restrain and gain 11 to 20 pounds.
Trying to lose weight if you are overweight or obese
Cackovic further states that obesity can increase the risk of having a miscarriage, preeclampsia or stillbirth. Thus the restriction on how much to gain when you become pregnant. Having said that, it is hardly recommended that even women who are obese should not try to actively lose weight when they are pregnant especially through restrictive diet. Diet causes the body to go into starvation mode. It creates carbon fragments from the liver called ketones. Ketones are used by the body to release energy when there are not enough calories. But ketones are also known to damage the baby’s brain if they cross the placenta and reach the fetus.
It is known to happen that women, who are obese due to their eating habits, lose weight during their pregnancy because of the restricted, nutrition rich diet they are forced to eat for the health of the baby.
Some women who are put on a strict diet because of gestational diabetes also tend to lose weight. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that impacts pregnant women and increases the blood sugar level in the body. The strict diet that restricts the sugar intake and eating plan may result in loss of weight in some cases
